These words, posted on a Minnesota fishing reports site, are echoed by our Garden Lake Resort guests and others who have been out on Garden Lake and our chain lakes, White Iron, Farm and South Farm.
Spring fishing is at its best.
The lakes around Ely Minnesota, especially those on our chain, are hot spots. Anglers are taking not only their limits of fish, but also very large fish. "Large northern pike, measuring up to 42-inches, were recently pulled from White Iron, Garden, and Basswood lakes," the site reports.
Although our 653-acre Garden Lake has a maximum depth of 55 feet, over a third of it is 15 feet in depth or less, making it perfect for backtrolling along weed edges and rock reefs where the walleye lurk or catching black crappies that have moved into the shallows to spawn.
This week at our resort, Dennis King and his lifelong partner have been enjoying the smallmouth bass fishing on Garden Lake, catching fish up to 21" long. They have found that the soft body baits have worked the best, including the Albino Salty Flukes and 3" to 4" Tube Jigs in a smoke color. Dennis is a catch and release advocate, which helps to continue great fishing for all of us in the years to come.
